14 Fire Loss Compensation Cases in Gwangju and South Jeolla Over 3 Years... Over 20 Million Won Paid Out

According to an analysis of audit data submitted by the National Fire Agency to Park Junghyun, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea representing Daedeok District in Daejeon, there were 15 claims for loss compensation filed in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province from 2022 through June of this year. Of these, 14 cases were approved, resulting in a total payout of 22,420,500 won.

In Gwangju, there were no claims for loss compensation until last year; however, as of June this year, seven cases occurred, with 11,154,000 won paid out. In South Jeolla Province, seven out of eight cases since 2022 were approved, with 11,276,500 won paid out.

By year, there was one case in 2022 (700,000 won), none in 2023, four cases in 2024 (9,277,500 won), and two cases as of June 2025 (1,299,000 won).

The loss compensation system is a policy in which the government compensates for damages to private property that occur unavoidably during legitimate duties such as firefighting or rescue operations carried out by firefighters.

Assemblyman Park stated, "The burden of fire-related damages should not fall on individual firefighters, but rather on the state. Simplifying the claim procedures and specifying the review standards for the loss compensation system will help protect both the legitimate public duties of firefighters and the property of citizens."
