Police: "We Respect the Court's Decision"
Former Korea Communications Commission Chairperson Lee Jinsook, who was released by a court decision, criticized the police, stating, "After witnessing the violent behavior of the police, I wondered how ordinary citizens must feel."
About 20 minutes after the court order, at around 6:45 p.m. on October 4, Lee walked out of Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul. The handcuffs that had been on her wrists at the time of her arrest were no longer there.
Lee remarked, "Although the police and prosecutors put handcuffs on me, the judiciary removed them," and added, "I feel hopeful that at least a trace of democracy remains somewhere in the Republic of Korea." She continued, "What we see most often alongside President Lee Jaemyung's schedule are scenes of courtrooms, detention centers, and holding cells," claiming, "The implication conveyed in these images is that if you cross the president, you too could end up in a holding cell."
She said, "It was the power of the citizens that prevented this from happening," and expressed her gratitude to those who supported her from various places, before leaving the scene in a prepared vehicle. Lawmakers from the People Power Party and conservative civic groups were also present at the site to show their support.
Meanwhile, the police stated, "We respect the court's decision," following the court's order to release Lee. "The court acknowledged the necessity of the investigation and the legality of the arrest, but determined that the continued need for detention was not recognized, which is why the release was decided," they explained.
