Sanae Takaichi, former Minister for Economic Security of Japan, has effectively won the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership election, which determines the next Prime Minister.
On October 4, at the LDP headquarters in Tokyo, former Minister Takaichi secured 185 votes in the runoff for the 29th party leader, defeating Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Shinjiro Koizumi, who received only 156 votes, by a margin of 29 votes.
In the first round of the election, which featured five candidates, she topped the list with 183 votes. Minister Koizumi came in second with 164 votes and advanced to the runoff.
She has become the first female leader of the LDP and is expected to become Japan's first-ever female Prime Minister.
