Mayor Oh Criticizes Government's Supply Measures as "Unrealistic Plans"
"Cooperation Should Be Based on Feasible Alternatives"
On October 3, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon emphasized a private sector-led housing supply policy and proposed that the government cooperate with this approach.
Mayor Oh posted an article on Facebook titled "The Government's Backward Housing Supply Policy-Seoul Will Focus on Groundbreaking," stating, "Whenever families gather for the holidays, there is always one topic of conversation: housing issues." He stressed, "It is a challenge that must be addressed for the lives and happiness of our citizens."
On September 29, Mayor Oh announced Shintong Planning 2.0, which includes the groundbreaking of 310,000 housing units by 2031, with 198,000 units to be supplied in the highly sought-after Han River Belt. He stated, "Ninety-six percent of the targeted groundbreaking volume is already in designated zones, making this a feasible commitment."
Mayor Oh explained, "We have eliminated bottlenecks that existed at every stage of the redevelopment process, reducing the procedure from 18.5 years to 12 years." He added, "This is Seoul's approach to rapidly and reliably supplying housing where it is needed by leveraging the vitality of the private sector."
He also pointed out, "In contrast, the Lee Jaemyung administration is repeating the public sector-centered supply method that failed under the Moon Jae-in administration," and criticized, "They are only presenting unrealistic plans, such as using idle sites that have not even been designated as zones and compulsory redevelopment projects that residents avoid."
Mayor Oh added, "Both the government and the Seoul Metropolitan Government agree on the necessity of housing supply," and continued, "If that is the case, wouldn't it be desirable to cooperate with each other based on feasible alternatives?"
