Authorities Suspect Internal Gas Explosion
No Casualties Reported
A dramatic accident occurred in New York, United States, when part of a rental apartment building collapsed due to a gas explosion. According to reports from local media outlets including the Associated Press on October 1 (local time), the incident took place around 8:10 a.m. at a 20-story apartment building in South Bronx, New York. The shock from the suspected gas explosion caused a portion of the building's side structure to collapse.
Video footage captured at the scene shows part of the building's exterior wall collapsing, with the chimney and bricks falling down. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
The building is a rental apartment operated by the New York City Housing Authority and is known to be primarily inhabited by working-class residents. Local fire authorities suspect that the gas explosion occurred inside the chimney connected to the boiler room. They believe the shock caused the structural collapse and are currently investigating the specific circumstances of the incident.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams held a press conference at the scene after the accident and stated, "Although part of the building collapsed, it is very fortunate that, as of now, there have been no casualties or injuries. Some residents from certain lines of the building have been evacuated, and they will be able to return once the structural safety is confirmed."
