Shin Jeonghun, chairman of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee (Democratic Party of Korea, Naju and Hwasun in South Jeolla Province), visited Suncheon Araet Market on October 1 as his first schedule during the Chuseok holiday, after completing the National Assembly personnel hearing and a Q&A session on pending issues at the National Information Resources Management Agency. He listened directly to the voices of merchants and citizens. On-site, Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Moonsu (Suncheon, Gwangyang, Gokseong, Gurye-gap in South Jeolla Province) also joined to hear the sentiments of the local community.
Chairman Shin stated, "As this year's Chuseok is the longest holiday, I will do my utmost as chairman of the Public Administration and Security Committee to ensure that the holiday concludes safely without any major accidents, so that the public can enjoy a safe and comfortable holiday."
Merchants met on-site said, "The market has regained its vibrancy compared to before, thanks to the distribution of consumption coupons." In response, Chairman Shin emphasized, "For the local gift certificate program to function properly, more people need to be able to use it conveniently, and this should help revitalize local businesses." He added, "The government, local authorities, and the National Assembly will work together to improve the system."
Chairman Shin also announced plans to conduct a signature campaign during the Chuseok holiday in support of enacting the 'Basic Income for Rural and Fishing Villages Act,' which he sponsored. He said, "A basic income for rural and fishing communities is the minimum safety net to support the lives of farmers and fishermen, and a structural solution to prevent the extinction of local areas." He continued, "I hope that this signature campaign, together with the public during the holiday, will provide strong momentum for legislative progress."
After visiting Suncheon Araet Market, Chairman Shin held a meeting with the Plant Managers' Council of Yeosu Petrochemical Complex to listen to industrial issues. He stated that he would continue to meet with labor unions and citizens to hear their concerns and faithfully reflect the voices of the local economy and labor sites in policy.
Meanwhile, during this Chuseok holiday, Chairman Shin plans to visit various local traditional markets and industrial and livelihood sites, aiming to broaden public consensus on measures to revive the local economy and to institutionalize basic income for rural and fishing communities.
