The KOSPI index surpassed the 3,500 mark for the first time ever at the opening of trading on October 2, 2025.
As of 9:17 a.m. on this day, the KOSPI was trading at 3,523.33, up 67.50 points (1.95%) from the previous trading day. Since the market opened, the index has remained above 3,500, maintaining strong momentum. This marks a new intraday record high in seven trading sessions. So far, foreign investors have been net buyers of 515.6 billion won, while individual investors and institutional investors have continued to sell, with net sales of 460 billion won and 42.9 billion won, respectively.
Large-cap semiconductor stocks surged, driving the index higher. Market leader Samsung Electronics was trading at 89,500 won, up 4.07%, while SK Hynix soared 8.61% to 391,000 won. At one point, Samsung Electronics even recovered the 90,000 won level.
Investor sentiment improved following news that Samsung and SK would participate as key partners in the "Stargate Project," a massive global artificial intelligence (AI) data center initiative led by OpenAI. The project is valued at 700 trillion won, and the two companies have agreed to go beyond supplying memory semiconductors to also collaborate on AI chips and jointly develop AI data centers.
Among the top stocks by market capitalization, LG Energy Solution and Samsung Biologics were also up by 0.72% and 0.30%, respectively.
However, Hanwha Aerospace was down 1.55% at 1,082,000 won. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and KB Financial Group were also down by 1.89% and 0.69%, respectively.
Lee Sunghoon, a researcher at Kiwoom Securities, stated, "We believe the upward momentum in the domestic stock market, centered on semiconductors, will continue," adding, "With positive news flow regarding semiconductors both domestically and internationally, we expect buying to continue to focus on semiconductors today as well."
The KOSDAQ index was trading at 851.20, up 5.86 points (0.69%) from the previous session.
In the KOSDAQ market, individual investors were net buyers of 34.6 billion won, while foreign investors and institutional investors continued to sell, with net sales of 12.5 billion won and 19.3 billion won, respectively.
Among the top stocks by market capitalization, Alteogen (up 0.33%), Ecopro BM (up 2.13%), Peptron (up 0.50%), and Ecopro (up 0.74%) were rising. In contrast, Rainbow Robotics (down 0.98%), Pharmaresearch (down 1.76%), and LIG ChemBio (down 0.67%) were declining.
