Gwangju City Mobilizes for a 'Clean Chuseok' with Urban Maintenance and Comprehensive Waste Management

On October 1, the Gwangju city government announced that, in preparation for the upcoming Chuseok holiday, it will implement comprehensive environmental maintenance and thorough household waste management measures around multi-use facilities such as major roadsides, terminals, and traditional markets, to ensure that citizens can enjoy the holiday in a more pleasant and hygienic environment.

The city will also strengthen public campaigns and guidance inspections to minimize household waste generation and prevent food waste from being included in pay-as-you-throw garbage bags. In anticipation of increased waste output during the holiday, the city will further reinforce efforts to promote and monitor the separation of food waste from regular trash and to establish a culture of proper waste separation.

To this end, 977 environmental management staff will be assigned to special shifts, operating a waste collection situation room and mobile cleaning teams. During the holiday, household waste collection will proceed as usual on October 3, 4, 8, and 9. However, for three days from October 5 to 7, household waste collection will be suspended throughout all areas of Gwangju, except for some recycling collection in Buk-gu district.

Waste treatment facilities, including food waste recycling centers, will organize emergency teams to ensure there are no disruptions in processing waste generated during the holiday period.

Jung Mikyung, head of the Resource Circulation Division, stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure thorough household waste management so that citizens can enjoy a prosperous Chuseok holiday in a pleasant environment," and added, "We especially ask citizens to demonstrate mature environmental awareness by refraining from mixing food waste in pay-as-you-throw garbage bags."
