Yeongju City, Gyeongbuk Province, held the "Yeongju Carbon-Free Rural Development Project Resident Briefing" at Yeongju Culture and Arts Center on the 30th of last month, with about 300 residents attending. During the event, the city announced its plans for constructing a clean hydrogen power plant and outlined the expected benefits. The briefing was co-hosted and organized by Yeongju City and Korea East-West Power Co., Ltd.

Previously, Yeongju City signed a memorandum of understanding for investment worth a total of 1.2 trillion won with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Korea East-West Power Co., Ltd. From 2025 to 2035, the city plans to build a 500MW carbon-free clean hydrogen power plant and a battery energy storage system (BESS) on a 115,700-square-meter site.

Through this project, Yeongju City expects to create more than 250 direct jobs and generate employment for 10,000 people during the construction phase, resulting in substantial local job creation. The city also anticipates various economic ripple effects, including 17.4 billion won in resident support funds, 100.8 billion won in local tax revenue, and approximately 2.346 trillion won in production inducement effects. Furthermore, the project is expected to have a positive impact on the creation of an energy-manufacturing convergence industrial cluster linked to the Yeongju Advanced Bearing National Industrial Complex, as well as on attracting related industries such as AI data centers in the future.

Yeongju City plans to actively gather residents' opinions and continue to promote a transparent and participatory project by holding public hearings, producing promotional materials, conducting local economic impact analyses, and surveying public awareness.

Yu Jeonggeun, Acting Mayor of Yeongju City, stated, "This briefing was a meaningful opportunity to share the achievement of attracting the clean hydrogen power plant with our citizens," and added, "We will do our utmost to reflect residents' opinions and help Yeongju become the center of clean hydrogen in Korea."
