Geochang County Mobilizes to Minimize Civil Complaints After NIRS Fire

Notice of Suspended Services and Backup Reinforcement
Enhanced Safety Measures Including Smishing Prevention

Geochang County in South Gyeongsang Province announced on October 1 that it is making every effort to minimize inconvenience for residents and provide stable administrative services in response to the fire at the Daejeon National Information Resources Service (NIRS).

Since September 27, immediately after the fire, the county has conducted emergency inspections of its own operating systems and government services that residents use daily. It has also established response measures for areas where inconvenience is expected and continues to update and improve these measures daily based on the latest information.

Currently, essential administrative services such as electronic administrative signatures and electronic document distribution have been restored. However, some services, including the National Civil Complaints Portal and mobile identification, remain inaccessible nationwide. In response, Geochang County held a countermeasure meeting on the same day, presided over by Governor Koo Inmo, and is actively working to minimize inconvenience by providing real-time updates on service restrictions and alternative measures through notifications on its official website.

In addition, to minimize inconvenience for residents caused by delays in recovery from the fire, the county has been operating various offline service channels, including in-person visits, phone, and fax, since September 29. For key areas such as real estate and tax services, alternative processing procedures have been established to further reduce inconvenience for residents.

Furthermore, taking this central government incident as an opportunity, Geochang County is preparing improvement measures such as reinforcing batteries and backup devices to strengthen the safety of its information infrastructure.

Governor Koo Inmo stated, "This fire has once again highlighted the importance of safety management for the nation's core infrastructure," adding, "Geochang County will do its utmost to further enhance our response capabilities and provide stable administrative services so that residents can feel secure."

Meanwhile, there has been a recent increase in payment fraud cases involving scam text messages impersonating government agencies or offering compensation, taking advantage of the service outage. The county emphasized that official text messages from public institutions do not include internet URLs, and urged residents to immediately delete any suspicious messages without clicking on any links.
