KT and MS Launch 'SOTA K', an AI Model Tailored for Korea

KT has partnered with Microsoft (MS) to introduce an artificial intelligence (AI) model optimized for Korean society based on GPT-4o. On September 29, KT officially launched 'SOTA K Built on GPT-4o' (SOTA K), describing it as a new AI model that combines global technological capabilities with specialized features tailored to Korea.

KT explained that this model was developed to address the limitations of existing large language models (LLMs), which are heavily skewed toward English-language data and fail to sufficiently reflect the Korean language and the unique social and cultural context of Korea. The company secured a large volume of high-quality, Korea-specific data for training and, through collaboration with MS, advanced GPT-4o to better suit Korean society.

SOTA K embodies four key philosophies: protection of data sovereignty, understanding of Korean culture, ensuring model choice, and providing safe and responsible AI. According to KT, the model can smoothly understand and generate not only Korean honorifics and dialects but also specialized terminology used in specific industries such as law, finance, and history, greatly enhancing its practicality in business environments.

KT stated that, based on quantitative and qualitative evaluations conducted using its proprietary Korean AI assessment indicators, SOTA K outperformed GPT-4o in key areas such as Korean language comprehension and generation, reasoning, reflection of social and cultural context, and domain-specific knowledge. The company particularly emphasized that SOTA K delivered superior results in civil service and naturalization exams, which require advanced knowledge of Korean history, laws, and language, surpassing GPT-4o's performance.

The model's capabilities have also been verified through real-world applications. Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance achieved results in automatic summarization of insurance policy terms and generation of call center agent scripts; EBS succeeded in generating curriculum-specific questions for elementary, middle, and high school courses; and Yonsei Medical Center confirmed its effectiveness in providing patient-friendly guidance using medical data mixed with English and Korean. Korea Electric Power Corporation also recognized SOTA K's clear and prompt Q&A capabilities and is considering integration with its internal systems.

Going forward, KT plans to first apply SOTA K to its own B2C (business-to-consumer) operations to verify its performance and stability, and then expand the service offering to partner companies. Yoon Kyunga, Head of KT Agentic AI Lab (Executive Vice President), said, "SOTA K is an innovative model that achieves both global-level technological capability and Korean-specific specialization. Building on the technical expertise accumulated through collaboration with MS, we will continue to develop diverse AI models and contribute to the activation of the domestic AI ecosystem."
