Goryeong County Hosts 1st Senior Shulren Tournament and Selects Players for Provincial Competition

Goryeong County in North Gyeongsang Province (Governor Lee Namchul) held the "1st Senior Shulren Tournament of Goryeong County" on September 25.

This tournament, organized by the Goryeong County Lifelong Education Leaders Association (Chairman Kim Hongcheol), aimed to promote healthy leisure activities for seniors, enhance intergenerational communication, and select outstanding players who will qualify to participate in the provincial Shulren tournament scheduled for October.

The tournament was divided into categories for participants in their 60s, 70s, and 80s to 90s.

In the 60s category, Han Taesuk from Ssangnim-myeon took first place, while Hwang Kyungsuk from Seongsan-myeon came in second, and Jeon Hyesuk from Gaejin-myeon placed third. In the 70s category, Gong Euijeong from Dasan-myeon won first place, Kim Jeongja from Dasan-myeon took second, and Yang Wonhui from Daegaya-eup secured third place.

In the 80s to 90s category, Woo Hyeseok from Daegaya-eup took first place, with Jo Geumjo and Chae Yundeuk from Seongsan-myeon winning second and third place, respectively.

The players selected to represent Goryeong County at the provincial tournament, based on their overall high scores, are: 1st place, Gong Euijeong (Dasan-myeon); 2nd place, Kim Jeongja (Dasan-myeon); 3rd place, Yang Wonhui (Daegaya-eup); and 4th place, Lee Gyesaeng (Daegaya-eup).

Jeong Hakseon, a 96-year-old from Deokgok-myeon, participated in the tournament, bringing energy to the venue and demonstrating that "age is just a number."

This tournament was part of the "Learn GO! Share GO! Our Neighborhood Is a Campus!" project, operated by the Goryeong County Lifelong Education Leaders Association. As part of the new lifelong learning city designation project, it was organized to promote brain training, cognitive enhancement, and social interaction for seniors, as well as to spread a lifelong learning culture led by local residents.

Governor Lee Namchul stated, "Through this tournament, we were able to promote not only the physical and mental health of our seniors but also create opportunities for intergenerational communication," adding, "We will continue to implement various programs to support a vibrant later life."
