All Workers Depart After Up to Six Months of Employment
Short-term seasonal workers from Laos, who entered the country as part of the Gangneung City Rural Workforce Brokerage Center (public type) national project and made significant contributions to alleviating the local labor shortage, all departed on the 25th.
The Rural Workforce Brokerage Center is a cooperative project between the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation and local governments, which brings in seasonal workers for short-term stays during the busy farming season to supply labor to farms. Since March, these workers have been employed for up to six months at various farms in Gangneung City, working with key local products such as potatoes, cabbage, radishes, fruit, and flowers.
To ensure the safe stay and smooth adaptation of the seasonal workers, the city has implemented various support measures, including cultural experience events, accommodation renovations, and medical expense support. By supplying excellent labor to farms in need during the busy season, the program has received strong approval from both employers and seasonal workers.
One of the departing Laotian workers shared, "It was a great opportunity to meet good people and experience various agricultural activities in Gangneung. If I have the chance, I would definitely like to work here again."
Kim Kyungtae, head of the Agricultural Policy Division, said, "Next year, we plan to further expand the seasonal workforce in agriculture through continued selection for the Rural Workforce Brokerage Center project. Based on this, we will strive to resolve the chronic labor shortage in rural areas and strengthen the competitiveness of local agriculture."
