A tuberculosis case has been reported at a social welfare center in Nam District, Gwangju, prompting health authorities to launch an epidemiological investigation.


According to Nam District officials on September 25, a mobile tuberculosis screening conducted by the Korean National Tuberculosis Association at a social welfare center in Nam District, Gwangju, on September 16 confirmed that a woman, identified as A (86), had tested positive for tuberculosis. She is currently hospitalized at a specialized tuberculosis treatment facility and is receiving care.


In response to the case, health authorities have classified a total of 54 people, including facility staff, as contacts and have conducted an initial epidemiological investigation. They have secured a list of individuals requiring further testing and plan to carry out additional examinations.


Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is mainly transmitted through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing. Early detection and consistent medication are crucial, and long-term treatment is required for those infected.
