Boosting Rural Vitality and Attracting Young Farmers
Laying the Foundation for the Successful 2027 World Strawberry Industry Expo
A new smart horticultural complex will be established in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province. This will be the fourth such complex in the province, following Buyeo, Dangjin, and Yesan, and is expected to significantly boost rural vitality and attract young farmers.
The South Chungcheong Provincial Government announced on September 25 that Nonsan City was selected as the final candidate in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' "Smart Horticultural Complex Infrastructure Development" project, securing 2.345 billion won in national funding.
In addition to the national funding, the project will receive 310 million won from the provincial government and 740 million won from the city government, bringing the total investment to 3.35 billion won.
The smart horticultural complex will be developed on a 6.7-hectare site in Magupyeong-ri, Bujeok-myeon, Nonsan City, and is scheduled for completion by 2028.
When linked with the nearby strawberry industry smart farm cluster currently under development, the entire smart farm hub will cover 14.1 hectares, with a total investment of 7.05 billion won.
The provincial government expects that this project will expand facility-based cultivation of Nonsan’s signature strawberries (such as Kingsberry, Vitaberry, and Seolhyang), increase farmers’ income by establishing a stable production base and responding to climate change through smart farm technology.
Furthermore, the complex is expected to evolve beyond a simple production facility into a convergence complex encompassing distribution, processing, experiential activities, and tourism, thereby revitalizing agriculture and rural communities, attracting young farmers, and creating local jobs.
A provincial official stated, "The Nonsan smart horticultural complex will become a key hub leading the structural reform of agriculture in South Chungcheong Province," adding, "Together with the strawberry industry smart farm cluster, it will contribute to the successful hosting of the 2027 World Strawberry Industry Expo."
