The Netflix animation "K-Pop Demon Hunters" has become explosively popular, bringing Japan's brutal past back into the spotlight.

Recently, an overseas TikToker released a video stating, "After watching K-Pop Demon Hunters, I searched for the history of tigers and discovered that Japan exterminated tigers in Joseon during the last century." The video quickly garnered 1.2 million views and 180,000 likes, imprinting Japan's atrocities on viewers around the world.

In fact, during the Japanese colonial period, Japan classified tigers as "harmful beasts" and systematically hunted them from 1917, leading to their extinction.

Seo Kyungduk, a professor at Sungshin Women's University, commented, "This is not the first time that Japan's history as a perpetrator has been exposed to the world through OTT platforms." Apple TV's "Pachinko" vividly depicted forced labor and the issue of Japanese military "comfort women," while Netflix's "Gyeongseong Creature" also exposed Japan's crimes to the world by addressing the horrific human experiments conducted by Unit 731 during the colonial era.

Professor Seo stated, "The global success of Korean content through OTT platforms has made it possible to widely inform viewers around the world about Japan's atrocities during the colonial period. I hope that, going forward, an even greater variety of K-content will spread globally so that the history of Asia can be properly recognized by people worldwide."
