Lee Gaeho Urges Transfer of Sorokdo Island’s Administrative and Management Functions to Goheung County

"All 340 Patients Are Non-Infectious... Medical Functions Reduced"
"Living Conditions and Tourism Infrastructure as a Catalyst for Regional Development"

Lee Gaeho Urges Transfer of Sorokdo Island’s Administrative and Management Functions to Goheung County Lee Gaeho, member of the Democratic Party of Korea.

Lee Gaeho, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea representing Damyang, Hampyeong, Yeonggwang, and Jangseong in South Jeolla Province, called for the transfer of administrative and management functions of the National Sorokdo Hospital to Goheung County and urged the government to swiftly implement measures to improve the living conditions of local residents.

On September 24, during a plenary session of the National Assembly's Health and Welfare Committee, Lee stated, "There are about 340 patients living on Sorokdo Island, but all of them are non-infectious, and the hospital's medical functions have been substantially reduced."

He added, "Nevertheless, 210 management personnel continue to control the entire island as a restricted hospital zone, which is hindering the proper management of public facilities such as roads and rivers, as well as the provision of essential services for residents. The hospital should focus on its core medical functions, while Goheung County should take responsibility for administrative and living infrastructure services for residents and tourists."

He further pointed out, "Although President Lee Jaemyung personally visited Sorokdo Island and instructed a review of the administrative transfer, the Ministry of Health and Welfare is only conducting a long-term study covering the entire island, which is increasing distrust among residents. Even if only part of the restricted hospital zone is addressed, a prompt study should be carried out and a clear position presented by the end of the year."

Lee reiterated, "Sorokdo Island is not just an issue for Goheung County. The management of modern cultural heritage, the convenience of residents, and the expansion of tourism infrastructure are directly linked to the development of South Jeolla Province and the quality of life for its residents. The administrative, cultural, and tourism functions of Sorokdo Island must be newly defined from the perspective of regional development in South Jeolla."
