"Opening the Future of Synthetic Biology"... 'KSBB-AFOB Conference 2025' Kicks Off

Over 3,000 Scholars and Industry Leaders from More Than 40 Countries Gather

The "KSBB-AFOB Conference 2025," a gathering of leading global scholars to discuss the "Sustainable Bio economy," opened on September 24 at the Grand Hyatt Incheon Hotel.


Jointly hosted by the Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (KSBB) and the Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB), this conference is themed "Frontiers in Bio manufacturing: Shaping a Sustainable Bio economy." Approximately 3,000 biotechnology (BT) experts from industry, academia, research, and government across about 40 countries worldwide are participating.

The conference features a keynote lecture by James Collins, professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who is regarded as a founder of "synthetic biology" and credited with establishing synthetic biology as an engineering discipline beyond traditional life sciences. His lecture is titled "Synthetic Biology: Programming Biology as a System."


Other keynote speakers include Tobias Erb, professor at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, who will present on "Carbon Fixation and Sustainable Catalyst Development through Synthetic Biology Approaches," and Jiang Xiannen, professor at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology in China, who will discuss "Next-Generation Biosensor Technologies for Revolutionizing Precision Diagnostics and Environmental Monitoring."

Emily Leproust, CEO of Twist Bioscience in the United States, and David Winickoff, Ph.D., from the Directorate for Science, Technology and Innovation at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), along with other world-renowned scholars, will deliver lectures on the advancement of synthetic biology and strategies for a sustainable bio economy.


At the opening ceremony, Kim Dongmyung, president of the Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (KSBB), chair of the KSBB-AFOB Conference 2025 organizing committee, and professor in the Department of Applied Chemical Engineering at Chungnam National University, stated, "This conference, held in celebration of the society's 40th anniversary, will go beyond sharing academic achievements to serve as a platform for industry-academia-research collaboration and international knowledge exchange. It will also make a significant contribution to the global advancement of Korea's bio industry."
