Czech President: "Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant Contract Based on High Regard for Korean Companies' Outstanding Capabilities"

President Lee Jaemyung, who is visiting New York, United States to attend the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, held his first summit with President Petr Pavel of the Czech Republic on the 23rd (local time) in the President's Office at the UN headquarters. During the meeting, President Lee proposed expanding cooperation beyond nuclear power to include semiconductors, electric vehicles, and the defense industry.

On this day, President Lee stated, "This year marks the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and the Czech Republic, as well as the 10th anniversary of establishing our strategic partnership. I am very pleased with the remarkable progress our two countries have made." He added, "Since both nations share the commonality of citizens who have defended democracy, I hope we can further develop our bilateral relationship based on these similarities and the values we share."


President Pavel referenced the final contract signed in June for the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Dukovany, Czech Republic, noting that this decision was based on a high evaluation of Korean companies' outstanding capabilities. In response, President Lee emphasized, "The Czech side has actively supported Korean companies' investment activities thus far. I look forward to mutually beneficial development as our cooperation expands beyond nuclear power to include semiconductors, electric vehicles, and the defense industry."

Additionally, President Pavel mentioned Korea's role as the president of the UN Security Council in September, stressing the need for strengthened cooperation among democracies that share values amid changes in the international community. He also expressed hope to visit Korea if the opportunity arises.


President Lee responded, "I welcome President Pavel's intention to visit Korea," adding, "I hope continued exchanges between our leaders and deepened cooperation will further advance the relationship between our two countries."
