The Gangwon Tourism Foundation (CEO Sung Hyun Choi, hereafter referred to as the Foundation) announced on the 24th that on the previous day, it had signed a "Mutual Cooperation Agreement for the Development of Onshore Wind Power Tourism Resources" with Taebaek City, Korea Energy Agency Gangwon Regional Headquarters, Korea Institute of Climate Change Research, and Taebaek Gadoksan Wind Power Co., Ltd., aiming to open a new future for tourism in former mining areas.

This agreement was promoted based on the government's carbon neutrality policy and the growing public interest in eco-friendly energy. The participating organizations agreed to utilize Taebaek's extensive onshore wind power complexes as core tourism resources, with the goal of creating high value-added tourism experiences that blend technology and nature.

According to the agreement, each organization will divide roles based on its expertise.

The Gangwon Tourism Foundation will oversee the planning, promotion, and marketing of tourism products, while Taebaek City will provide administrative support such as permits and connect the project with the local community. The Korea Energy Agency Gangwon Regional Headquarters will offer technical expertise and educational consultation on renewable energy, and the Korea Institute of Climate Change Research will provide academic consultation related to carbon neutrality. Finally, Taebaek Gadoksan Wind Power Co., Ltd. will open up its wind power complex, the core resource, and take responsibility for on-site safety management.

The Taebaek Gadoksan Wind Power Complex, where pristine nature coexists with advanced energy facilities, is expected to create synergy in attracting tourists through differentiated content such as highland trekking, a wind energy experience center, and eco-friendly leisure sports.

The Gangwon Tourism Foundation expects that this collaboration will strengthen the brand of all cities and counties in former mining areas, including Taebaek, as "sustainable eco-friendly tourism cities," and that the increasing number of visitors to the wind power complexes will revitalize the local economy.

Sung Hyun Choi, CEO of the Gangwon Tourism Foundation, said, "This agreement is an important first step in making clean energy the new center of tourism as we approach the '2025-2026 Visit Gangwon Years.' By bringing together the expertise of each organization, we will create unique tourism products that everyone can enjoy, actively contribute to administrative innovation, and help stimulate the local economy."
