Gyeonggi Province to Transform Transportation and Braille Services with AI... Launches Two Pilot Projects

Artificial intelligence (AI) kiosks that analyze real-time traffic conditions to provide optimal route and transfer information via voice guidance, as well as AI Braille printer technology that reduces the document analysis, Braille translation, and printing process from several months to just five minutes, are being implemented as pilot projects in Gyeonggi Province.

On September 24, Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Institute of Economics and Science announced that they have newly selected the second round of pilot projects for the "AI Challenge Program," which aims to solve social issues by integrating AI technology into public services.

The AI Challenge Program connects companies possessing AI technology with local governments and public institutions in the province, providing opportunities to test and validate their solutions on site. Launched for the first time this year, the program selected three projects in the first round in April, followed by two projects in the second round in September.

The additional projects selected in the second round include "Establishing an AI Conversational Smart Bus Information System" in Anyang City and "Revolutionizing Information Accessibility for the Visually Impaired with AI Braille Solutions" by the Hwaseong Industry Promotion Agency.

Anyang City is introducing AI voice conversation-based wayfinding kiosks to provide citizens with real-time, personalized transportation and daily life information. This information can also be accessed on mobile phones through the "Continue Viewing Service." The system offers a range of features, including optimal route guidance, transfer information, emotional motion avatars, and civil complaint response. With its intuitive design, high-performance voice recognition technology, and multilingual support, it is designed to be easily used by transportation-vulnerable groups and foreigners.

The Hwaseong Industry Promotion Agency is developing an AI Braille solution to revolutionize information accessibility for the visually impaired. The new solution reduces the time required for Braille document printing-which previously took several days to months using manual methods-to less than five minutes. It also enables AI to accurately convert complex document structures into Braille, making it possible to provide real-time information such as public civil service notices.

Kim Kibyung, Director of AI at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will continue to discover leading AI cases that contribute to solving social issues and actively introduce AI technology into public services, creating more opportunities for residents to experience the benefits of AI firsthand."
