Rammed Wrong-Way Vehicle in Busan
Court Fines Defendant 7 Million Won
An internet broadcaster who was streaming a live confrontation with a driver violating traffic laws has been fined after being charged with ramming the other vehicle.
According to Yonhap News on the 23rd, Judge Heo Sungmin of the Busan District Court Criminal Division 10 sentenced a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, to a fine of 7 million won on charges including special assault and special property damage.
Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of ramming his Audi into the Sportage driven by a man in his 70s, identified as Mr. B, while conducting a live internet broadcast at 5:58 a.m. on July 22 last year.
Mr. A, who works as an internet broadcaster, was reportedly live-streaming himself confronting drivers violating traffic laws at the time of the incident. He spotted Mr. B driving the wrong way down a one-way street in Busanjin District, Busan.
Mr. A blocked Mr. B’s path, told his viewers, "Should I go ahead?" and then moved forward, while Mr. B tried to reverse to make way. During this exchange, Mr. A’s car collided with Mr. B’s vehicle.
The court stated, "The defendant committed the crime by intentionally striking a vehicle driving incorrectly to use it as content for his internet TV broadcast," and added, "Given the circumstances, the nature of the crime is particularly egregious."
Meanwhile, it was revealed that Mr. A had previously been sentenced to two years and six months in prison for violating the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles from Sexual Abuse (quasi-sexual acts), and was incarcerated at Daegu Prison until July 15, 2023. He committed the current offense during his repeat offender period.
