The AI-based smart policing drone, which is being developed as a leading crime response technology in Jeju, will make its debut by the end of this year. This next-generation policing platform is capable not only of patrolling, but also of early detection of missing persons, tracking thieves, and preventing crowd-related accidents.
The Jeju Autonomous Police Committee, chaired by Park Youngboo, announced on the 23rd that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and Korea Radar Systems to enhance AI performance and will begin full-scale development of AI drones for crime prevention.
The core of the agreement is to invest a total of 1 billion won (800 million won in national funding and 200 million won from the province) to complete the AI-based smart policing drone by the end of this year, in line with the government’s policy of innovating work processes using AI.
The three organizations will work closely together to achieve tangible performance improvements and enhance business outcomes, collaborating on building and providing AI training data, evaluating AI performance, and providing technical support and infrastructure. The agreement period is five months.
The smart policing drone is equipped with AI technology to detect crime scenes in advance or respond quickly when incidents occur. It features early detection of missing persons through data analysis, suspect identification such as thieves using video recognition, and automatic emergency notifications for situations like crowd congestion accidents.
In particular, real-time video analysis AI software is being developed to enable artificial intelligence to directly analyze and carry out various policing functions that previously relied on police personnel, such as searching for missing persons, managing crowded events, protecting intoxicated or vulnerable individuals, and detecting agricultural theft.
This will overcome the limitations of manpower-based policing and enable more precise and advanced patrol, rescue, and search functions. Through this agreement, drones will evolve from simple patrol devices to “AI police officers” responsible for public safety.
Park Youngboo, Chairperson of the Jeju Autonomous Police Committee, stated, “The AI smart policing drone development project will serve as an opportunity to revolutionize traditional policing methods by integrating AI and drone technology into the field of public safety. We will work together with the Autonomous Police Force to ensure that policing drones become ‘AI police officers’ that protect the safety of Jeju residents.”
