In Gwangmyeong City, Gyeonggi Province, the citizen-led movement for carbon neutrality is gaining momentum.
On the 22nd, Gwangmyeong City held an event at the Gwangmyeong Cultural Center under the theme "The Past, Present, and Future of the Climate Volunteer Army," commemorating the enrollment of its 15,000th member. About 150 members of the Climate Volunteer Army attended the event, where they shared case studies, read a declaration, and participated in a special lecture, reaffirming their commitment to addressing the climate crisis and exploring future directions for action.
In particular, a citizen who became the 15,000th member of the Climate Volunteer Army last month, as well as another citizen who achieved 100,000 carbon neutrality points for three consecutive years, pledged to continue making changes through small actions in daily life. At the event, environmental activist and actress Park Jinhee delivered a special lecture titled "Code Red: Warning Signals from the Earth."
Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, stated, "The climate crisis is no longer an extraordinary event, but part of our daily lives," adding, "The steady steps of the Climate Volunteer Army, accumulating small actions in everyday life, are a source of pride for Gwangmyeong and a powerful driving force toward a carbon-neutral society."
Currently, more than 15,500 citizens are participating in the Climate Volunteer Army, and the city explained that there have been 1.12 million instances of carbon neutrality point activities. The city added that this achievement is equivalent to reducing about 250 tons of greenhouse gases, which is comparable to planting 70,000 trees.
