The Ansan Science Valley District has been designated as part of the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone.
On September 23, Gyeonggi Provincial Government announced that the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held the 145th Free Economic Zone Committee meeting on September 22 and approved the proposal to add the Ansan Science Valley District to the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone.
The Ansan Science Valley will drive innovation in Gyeonggi Province's manufacturing industry by digitally transforming the Banwol National Industrial Complex (15.4㎢) and the Sihwa National Industrial Complex (16.1㎢). The project period will run from 2025 to 2032, with a total investment of 410.5 billion won.
Gyeonggi Provincial Government plans to develop the Ansan Science Valley District as a global research and development (R&D) hub for advanced robotics and manufacturing industries.
With the additional designation of Ansan Science Valley (1.66㎢), the total area of the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone has expanded from 5.24㎢ across three districts, including the Pyeongtaek Poseung District, to 6.9㎢.
The Ansan Science Valley District is optimally positioned to establish a global industry-academia-research innovation ecosystem, as it is home to a concentration of universities, national research institutes, corporate research centers, and small and venture businesses.
The Hanyang University ERICA campus is responsible for training professionals and conducting research in intelligent robotics. The Korea Institute of Industrial Technology will develop and demonstrate standard process models for manufacturing robots, while the Korea Testing Laboratory and Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute will each handle collaborative robot testing, certification, and technical support.
Gyeonggi Provincial Government estimates that the development of the Ansan Science Valley District will generate an economic impact of 2.2 trillion won.
Kim Neungsik, Commissioner of the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone Authority, stated, "With the additional designation of the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone, Gyeonggi Province has laid a solid foundation to lead future advanced industries and secure new growth engines. Together with Ansan City and Hanyang University, the project operators, we will actively attract domestic and international companies in the advanced robotics sector and do our utmost to foster related industries."
