The South-North 9-Axis Expressway is a national core transportation network project, spanning a total length of 309.5 kilometers from Yanggu in Gangwon to Yeongcheon in North Gyeongsang, with a total project cost of 14.887 trillion won. The project aims to connect the inland north-south axis, thereby achieving balanced national development, improving accessibility in border and mountainous regions, and expanding logistics and tourism demand simultaneously. The council is composed of the mayors and county governors of the 10 cities and counties-Yanggu, Inje, Hongcheon, Pyeongchang, Jeongseon, Yeongwol, Bonghwa, Yeongyang, Cheongsong, and Yeongcheon-and oversees phased implementation and external cooperation.
The latest policy trends of the People’s Sovereignty Government were also closely reviewed. On August 13, at the National Policy Planning Committee’s public briefing, the construction of the South-North 9-Axis Expressway was included among the 123 key national policy tasks. At a town hall meeting in Chuncheon on the 12th, the President and the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport publicly emphasized the necessity of the project, and on the 16th, its inclusion in the national policy task management plan was confirmed. With the institutional and financial support framework now established at the government level, the council decided to promptly continue consultations with relevant ministries.
As a key agenda item, the committee adopted Yeongyang County’s proposal for a mascot relay performance and began practical preparations. The performance will take place at 11:00 AM on October 15 at the Yeongyang County Public Stadium, following the planned route of the South-North 9-Axis Expressway. Mascots from each city and county-Yeongcheon, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, Bonghwa, Yeongwol, Jeongseon, Pyeongchang, Hongcheon, Inje, and Yanggu-will pass the baton in sequence as they run around the track.
The council announced that it would focus its efforts on promotional and support activities in each city and county, and will soon launch joint projects such as resolution rallies, expanded performances, and campaign advertisements. Based on the discussions at this meeting, the Working Committee will activate cooperation channels with the central government, the National Assembly, and research institutions, and will systematically organize materials to enhance the route’s feasibility and business viability, continuing practical consultations for inclusion in the 3rd Expressway Construction Plan.
Yanggu County stated, “With the project now designated as a national policy task, all 10 cities and counties will strengthen their execution as one voice,” and added, “Starting with the Yeongyang County performance, we will spread the perception that this expressway is being built together with the public.” The council plans to regularly share the outcomes of future meetings and event preparations, and to strengthen communication with local residents to solidify the momentum for project implementation.
