Sharing Hometown Warmth and Community Spirit
with Transport Vessels to Submerged Villages
The Unmun-myeon Saemaul Women's Association of Cheongdo County, led by President Lee Jeongok, held a welcoming event on September 21 in front of the Unmun Dam Water Supply Management Office to greet visitors returning to their hometown for Chuseok, Korea's traditional holiday.
Cheongdo County operates a reservation-based transport vessel service for those visiting their ancestral villages submerged by the construction of Unmun Dam. For visitors heading to Ojin-ri and Gongam, areas with difficult road access, the county is temporarily operating a management boat with the cooperation of the Cheongdo County Water Management Office and the Unmun Branch of Korea Water Resources Corporation.
The Unmun-myeon Saemaul Women's Association has been providing cold beverages, snacks, and various conveniences to visitors returning home for the holidays every year, sharing the warmth of their hometown. With the largest number of visitors expected on September 27 and 28, the association plans to further enhance the welcoming atmosphere during those days.
The Cheongdo County Saemaul Women's Association also contributes to the local community through a variety of volunteer activities, including promoting happy families, sharing side dishes with love, and distributing kimchi.
Lee Jeongok, President of the Unmun-myeon Saemaul Women's Association, said, "For Chuseok, I wanted to help visitors coming home for ancestral rites feel the warmth of their hometown. In particular, I hoped to offer comfort and a sense of connection to those who cannot easily visit their ancestral graves due to the dam's construction. We will continue to work together with the community on various activities in the future."
