On September 22, the Incheon city government announced that it will launch a real-time bus location service at the end of this month to improve public transportation convenience for citizens.
To this end, the city signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Kakao on the same day for the implementation of the service. Under the agreement, the location information of all buses throughout Incheon will be updated every three seconds and provided to citizens via Kakao Map.
Currently, only estimated bus arrival times are available, but going forward, citizens will be able to check the exact real-time location of buses on the map. This service is being introduced for the first time in the Seoul metropolitan area and will also cover Ganghwa County and Ongjin County, which are underserved by public transportation.
The city explained that it was able to reduce costs by utilizing the Kakao Map platform, which is already familiar to many citizens, instead of building a separate system.
An official from the Incheon city government stated, "We plan to continue advancing the real-time bus location service, including the introduction of high-precision satellite navigation systems (GPS), to further improve citizen satisfaction with public transportation."
