Securing 12.3 Billion Won for Seven Projects
Full-Scale Efforts to Strengthen Citizen Safety Net
Sacheon City in South Gyeongsang Province has secured the largest-ever amount of national and provincial government funding for disaster prevention projects, taking full-scale action to strengthen its safety net to protect the lives and property of its citizens.
According to Sacheon City on September 22, the city has secured 12.3 billion won (8.3 billion won from the national government and 4 billion won from the provincial government) out of a total project budget of 16.6 billion won for seven disaster prevention projects scheduled for 2026, relying on national and provincial government funds.
The disaster prevention projects for which national and provincial funding has been secured this time include the installation of stormwater runoff reduction facilities in Hyangchon District, improvements to the Goeup and Seonin natural disaster risk zones, comprehensive maintenance of the flood-prone Guam District, stabilization of the steep slope risk area in Mangsang Park, and maintenance of the disaster risk reservoir in Sinboksang District.
In particular, the long-awaited "Chukdong Elementary School Natural Disaster Risk Zone Improvement Project" in Chukdong-myeon has been selected as a new project and will begin full-scale construction in February 2026.
This achievement in securing government funding is the result of Mayor Park Dongsik's visit to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety in May, where he actively explained the vulnerability and urgency of disaster-prone areas and requested national financial support.
As a result, most of the major disaster prevention projects to be carried out in 2025 and 2026 have been included as recipients of national and provincial funding, laying the foundation for significantly reducing the city's financial burden.
The area around Chukdong Elementary School, which has suffered frequent flooding during heavy rains, is expected to ensure safe routes to and from school for students through this improvement project. In addition, Hyangchon and Guam Districts are expected to prevent large-scale flood damage through the installation of stormwater retention tanks and river maintenance.
Furthermore, the stabilization of the steep slope risk area in Mangsang Park and the maintenance of the reservoir in Sinboksang District will completely prevent loss of life and property for residents through slope reinforcement and structural enhancements.
Mayor Park Dongsik stated, "Securing the largest-ever amount of national and provincial government funding was made possible by the interest of local residents and the proactive efforts of public officials," adding, "We will do our utmost to make Sacheon City a safe city from all kinds of disasters and to protect the precious lives and property of our citizens."
