"Sovereign AI Is About Competitiveness, Not Protection"... Future Strategies of Korean AI Startups

Choi Jonghyun Academic Foundation and Korea Higher Education Foundation Host 'AI Startup Talk'
Furiosa AI CTO, More CEO, and MarkVision Head of AI Share Insights on Entrepreneurship, Technology, and Vision

Domestic artificial intelligence (AI) startups have unveiled their strategies to break through Nvidia's monopolistic structure and secure competitiveness in the global market. In line with ongoing discussions about "Sovereign AI" (national AI sovereignty), startup leaders emphasized the importance of building capabilities that surpass open source rather than focusing on protecting the domestic market, highlighting the critical role of talent with strong execution and problem-solving skills.

The Choi Jonghyun Academic Foundation and the Korea Higher Education Foundation held the "AI Startup Talk" on the 19th at the foundation's conference hall in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, to discuss the global challenges and talent strategies of Korean startups. The lecture featured Kim Hanjun, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Furiosa AI, Cho Kangwon, CEO of More, and Lee Joohyeong, Head of AI at MarkVision, who shared their entrepreneurial backgrounds and core strategies.

The three speakers each gave presentations on the following topics: challenging the dominance in AI semiconductors, infrastructure software strategies through cost structure innovation, and global enforcement against counterfeit goods and content using AI.

Kim Hanjun, CTO, stated, "We aim to break through Nvidia's monopoly with low-power inference chips," while Cho Kangwon, CEO, emphasized, "True competitiveness lies not in the model itself, but in software that innovates cost structures." Lee Joohyeong, Head of AI, pointed out the importance of global intellectual property protection, noting, "The counterfeit goods market amounts to 500 trillion won annually."

Regarding the discussion on "Sovereign AI," which refers to national AI sovereignty, CEO Cho suggested, "It is more important to secure competitiveness that surpasses open source than to protect the domestic market." CTO Kim also remarked, "AI is fundamentally an arena of global competition."

On talent strategies, there was a consensus that "AI will handle low-level problem-solving, so humans should focus on problem definition and the ability to ask questions." The speakers also stressed that opportunities are open to individuals with strong prompt engineering and advanced problem-solving skills, as well as to startup teams with perseverance.
