Global Scholars Discuss "A Sustainable Future for Humanity" and More
Gyeongju is being reborn as an international forum connecting the wisdom of the world’s leading scholars with visions for the future of humanity.
The city of Gyeongju announced that it will host the '2025 International Gyeongju History and Culture Forum' for three days from September 19 to 21 at the Gyeongju Arts Center and surrounding areas.
This forum is hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, and Gyeongju City, and organized by the Gyeongju Cultural Foundation. It will be held under the theme of 'Connection, Innovation, Prosperity,' which is a core agenda of APEC.
On the first day, September 19, Park Chunhyou and Will Aronson, writers of the musical "No Other Choice but a Happy Ending," will deliver keynote speeches sharing the values of 'connection' and 'innovation' as they discuss the process of harmonizing different cultures and languages to create a single story.
On September 20, Professor Joseph Henrich of Harvard University will shed anthropological light on the evolution of creativity with a lecture titled "Homo Sapiens-Collective Brain, Connection, and the Origins of Creativity."
Following this, Japanese sociologist Professor Masahiro Yamada will interpret changing human relationships at the boundary between reality and the virtual world, while poet Park Jun and feminist scholar Jung Heejin will explore the possibilities of 'encounter' within personal emotions and social structures from a humanities perspective.
On September 21, physicist Kim Sangwook will address the shadows of development and the conditions for sustainable innovation with a lecture titled "Does Innovation Always Bring Prosperity?"
Next, Canadian philosopher Diane Enns will give a lecture on human relationships, loneliness, and the restoration of connections, bringing the forum to a close.
During the forum, the Fountain Plaza at Gyeongju Arts Center will also host a 'Book Festival,' featuring a pop-up book market with leading Korean publishers and local bookstores from Gyeongju, book talk shows with authors Koh Myunghwan, Seo Kyungseok, Lee Jiyoung, and Bong Taegyu, as well as a music concert accompanying reading and various other side events for citizens and visitors.
Forum lectures are available by advance reservation, with all seats priced at 10,000 won (a 50% discount is offered for Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongju residents).
Ticket holders will receive benefits such as book exchange vouchers from speakers and exhibition admission. Reservations can be made through the Gyeongju Cultural Foundation website and Ticketlink.
Joo Nakyoung, Mayor of Gyeongju, stated, "This forum is a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the sustainable future of humanity and seek new paths through humanistic values. I hope many people will show interest and participate in this forum, which will serve as a catalyst for Gyeongju to leap from the center of human history to a city leading the future."
