"The Tyrant's Chef" Tops Weekly Non-English TV Rankings
The Netflix original animation "K-Pop Demon Hunters" has set an unprecedented record in streaming history.
According to Netflix's official website "Tudum" on September 17, the cumulative number of views for K-Pop Demon Hunters has reached 314.2 million. This is the highest figure among all Netflix movies and series released to date.
K-Pop Demon Hunters already took the overall number one spot two weeks ago, and has since widened the gap by far surpassing "Squid Game" Season 1, which recorded 265.2 million views. Netflix compiles its "most-watched" rankings based on cumulative views during the first 91 days after release.
The popularity has led to a long-term box office hit. The animation has remained in the English-language film Top 10 for 13 consecutive weeks since its release, continuing its remarkable run, and last week (September 8-14), it recorded 22.6 million views, maintaining its weekly number one position. Notably, it ranked first in thirty-nine countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Argentina, Egypt, Malaysia, and Qatar.
K-Pop Demon Hunters is a fantasy action animation that depicts the K-pop idol group "Huntrix" fighting off evil spirits to save the world. Its Billboard chart-topping original soundtrack, direction infused with Korean elements, and witty dialogue have encouraged repeat viewing and fueled the growth of its global fandom.
During the same period, the fantasy historical drama "The Tyrant's Chef," starring Im Yoona and Lee Chaemin, ranked number one in the Netflix non-English TV category for the week, recording 6.8 million views.
This series debuted at number four in its first week, but steadily climbed the ranks through word of mouth, reaching the top spot in its fourth week after release. It ranked first in nine Asian countries, including Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Taiwan. The story follows a modern Michelin three-star chef who travels back in time to the Joseon Dynasty. The series is planned for a total of 12 episodes, with eight episodes released so far.
