Cheorwon County Selected as Final Recipient for National Heritage Media Art Contest Project at Former Workers' Party Headquarters

Securing 1.04 Billion Won in National and Provincial Funding
Selected for the Second Consecutive Year under the Theme "Cheorwon Peace Emergency: Connecting with the World"

Cheorwon County in Gangwon Province announced on the 17th that it has been selected as the final recipient for the "2026 National Heritage Media Art Contest Project" under the theme "Cheorwon Peace Emergency."

Cheorwon County Selected as Final Recipient for National Heritage Media Art Contest Project at Former Workers' Party Headquarters Cheorwon County Office building.

With its selection for the National Heritage Administration’s contest project, Cheorwon County has secured 1.04 billion won in national and provincial funding. The county plans to use these funds to shed new light on the historical value of the former Workers' Party of Korea Headquarters, a nationally registered heritage site, and to revitalize the local economy by promoting nighttime media tourism.

The county aims to deliver a message of peace inspired by the former Workers' Party of Korea Headquarters-a historical and cultural site that bears witness to Korea’s painful modern history-and to provide a healing space through art and light.

Although Cheorwon County attracts over 7 million tourists annually, the average length of stay is about five hours, which is 33% longer than the national average for local governments. However, due to a lack of nighttime content, the rate of tourists converting to overnight stays remains low.

This project is expected to serve as a solution to the lack of nighttime content, which has long been cited as an issue for tourism in Cheorwon.

A Cheorwon County official stated, "By utilizing advanced IT technology for this event, we hope to instill the importance of peace in the minds of children and express our gratitude to military personnel. In 2026, we plan to connect with international events, including UNESCO and overseas media art organizations, under the global message of division, remembrance, and peace, with the theme of 'Connecting with the World.'"

Meanwhile, the 2025 National Heritage Media Art Cheorwon Workers' Party Headquarters Project will be held as a nighttime event from September 26 to October 26. The popular character Pororo has been appointed as the promotional ambassador and is actively engaged in promotional activities.
