High Jumper Woo Sanghyeok Wins Silver at Tokyo World Athletics Championships
President Lee Jaemyung praised high jumper Woo Sanghyeok, who made history by winning two medals at the World Athletics Championships, including a silver medal in Tokyo, marking the first time a South Korean athlete has achieved this feat. He described Woo as "a source of great pride."
On September 17, President Lee posted on Facebook, "I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Woo Sanghyeok, who is writing a new chapter in the history of Korean athletics," expressing his admiration.
President Lee further stated, "Despite physical limitations resulting from the aftereffects of a childhood traffic accident, Woo overcame his challenges with indomitable determination. His pursuit has offered immense courage and hope not only to our nation, but also to people around the world."
He added, "With the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, the 2027 Beijing World Championships, and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics ahead, the entire nation will stand with Woo Sanghyeok and cheer him on throughout his journey."
Meanwhile, Woo Sanghyeok won South Korea's first-ever silver medal in athletics at the World Championships in 2022, and secured another silver medal at the Tokyo event held on September 16.
