Yoon Jeongmin of Gwangju Seo-gu Council Calls for Improvements to Alternate-Day Parking System

Conversion from Two Lanes to Three Lanes
Securing Traffic Flow

On September 16, Yoon Jeongmin, a member of the Gwangju Seo-gu Council, addressed the limitations and issues of the current alternate-day parking system during the '5-Minute Free Speech' session at the 333rd temporary council meeting. She proposed measures to ensure the system is effectively established.

The alternate-day parking system is designed to organize vehicles that are indiscriminately parked on both sides of narrow roads. By allowing parking on only one side of the street, the system aims to secure smooth traffic flow and improve access to local businesses, benefiting both merchants and residents.

Yoon stated, "Although the alternate-day parking system was introduced with good intentions, residents are experiencing inconveniences such as centerline violations and illegal parking in practice. Frequent centerline violations occur due to roadside parking on one-lane roads, and the responsibility for accidents resulting from this is unfairly placed on individual drivers."

She continued, "As a solution, I propose converting two-lane roads into three-lane roads to secure two lanes for traffic. I also urge practical measures to secure parking spaces, such as sharing and opening nearby auxiliary parking lots, as illegal parking enforcement remains insufficient and parking spaces around commercial areas are lacking."

Yoon added, "I hope that by reforming the operation of the alternate-day parking system, we can improve both resident convenience and safety. I will actively propose and cooperate through legislative activities so that the district office can implement effective traffic policies."
