Nighttime Illuminations, Performances, and Hands-on Programs on September 19-20
Wishing for the Successful Hosting of the APEC Summit
The UNESCO World Heritage site, Wolseong, the royal palace of Silla, is being reborn as the 'Palace of Light, Wolseong.'
The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage and the Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will hold an event combining nighttime illuminations, performances, and hands-on programs from 11 a.m. on September 19 to 8 p.m. on September 20 in the area north of Woljeonggyo Bridge in Gyeongju. The event aims both to wish for the successful hosting of the 2025 APEC Summit and to provide a stage where citizens and tourists can directly experience the latest discoveries from the Wolseong excavation.
At the 'Wolseong Experience Yard,' a variety of programs will be offered, inspired by artifacts from Saro Kingdom-era dwellings unearthed during this year's Wolseong excavation. Activities include 'Making a Moonlight Woven Wall Hanging,' where participants can try weaving textiles themselves, natural dye bag making, crafting jewelry boxes and necklaces, and filling wish pouches. There will also be a 'Walking Wolseong' program, allowing participants to tour the excavation site in person. Only thirty people per session can participate, and reservations must be made online.
The main stage will feature performances by an orchestra composed of Gyeongju civic groups and elementary and middle school students, fusion Korean traditional music, and Wolseong-themed performances. During the day, small-scale acts such as busking, traditional performances, and magic shows will add to the festive atmosphere.
At night, Wolseong will be illuminated with lights in the shapes of fireflies, the moon, rabbits, and more. Visitors can take photos and enjoy the nighttime scenery of the Silla royal palace. The installation will be available until the end of next month, allowing visitors to enjoy it during the APEC Summit period as well.
The Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage stated, "We hope this event will provide domestic and international visitors with an opportunity to experience the brilliant historical value of Silla's cultural heritage."
