Presidential Office Blocks Overinterpretation
of Its Stance on Calls from the Ruling Party
for Chief Justice Cho Heedae's Resignation
On September 16, Woo Sangho, Senior Presidential Secretary for Political Affairs, held an unscheduled press briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office and stated, "The Presidential Office has never discussed the future of Chief Justice Cho Heedae, nor does it have any plans to do so in the future."
This statement is seen as an attempt to dispel interpretations suggesting that the Presidential Office may be exerting influence, amid growing calls from the ruling party for Chief Justice Cho to resign.
Regarding this, an official from the Presidential Office said, "We are well aware of the public's concerns regarding a series of rulings and ongoing trials," and added, "While the Presidential Office agrees on the need for judicial reform, it does not involve itself in detail with matters being discussed in the legislature."
Previously, on the 15th, Kang Yoojung, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, commented during a briefing on the calls for Chief Justice Cho's resignation, saying, "There is no particular position from the Presidential Office," but also added, "We should reflect on the likelihood and reasons behind such demands, and in principle, we agree with that point."
