Joint Efforts to Foster AI Talent,
Demonstrate Healthcare Projects,
and Nurture Startups
Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced on September 16 that it has signed a business agreement with Gwangju Metropolitan City and Dong-gu District of Gwangju to promote an industrial ecosystem that integrates artificial intelligence (AI) and digital healthcare.

The signing ceremony, held the previous day at the business room of Gwangju Metropolitan City Hall, was attended by Kang Kijeong, Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, Lim Taek, Dong-gu District Mayor, and Lee Changjae, CEO of Daewoong Pharmaceutical. Under the agreement, Gwangju Metropolitan City will provide AI infrastructure, offer administrative support for companies, and establish a collaborative network among industry, academia, and research institutions. Dong-gu District will support demonstration projects for AI healthcare services. Daewoong Pharmaceutical plans to lead industrial development through AI healthcare research and development, demonstration projects, and the discovery and nurturing of startups, while also contributing to the revitalization of Gwangju’s local economy and the improvement of citizens’ health.
Additionally, Daewoong Pharmaceutical will participate in the AI Healthcare Startup Complex Center project being promoted by Dong-gu District. This center is a multi-purpose facility that provides support for business startups and demonstration projects, as well as health checkup services for local residents. Daewoong Pharmaceutical plans to establish a demonstration center there, allowing anyone to experience advanced digital healthcare devices firsthand. The company possesses a variety of digital healthcare products, including the smart hospital bed monitoring system 'Think', the wearable electrocardiogram device 'MobiCare', and the ring-type continuous blood pressure monitor 'CartBP Pro'.
Through this agreement, Daewoong Pharmaceutical aims to: advance smart hospital and precision medicine models based on health data accumulated at the center; provide integrated prevention, diagnosis, and management services that Gwangju citizens can directly benefit from; and accelerate the creation of new digital healthcare businesses by linking the AI and startup ecosystems.
Kang Kijeong, Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, stated, "If Gwangju’s AI infrastructure, Dong-gu’s demonstration environment, and Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s capabilities are combined, we can create a leading model in the AI healthcare sector. We will actively support the growth of the industrial ecosystem through our AI infrastructure and networks."
Lee Changjae, CEO of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, commented, "Gwangju’s infrastructure and demonstration environment provide the optimal conditions for corporate innovation. Through this agreement, by combining with Gwangju’s excellent AI infrastructure, we aim to promote regional industrial development and improve citizens’ health, ultimately contributing to strengthening national competitiveness."
Meanwhile, Gwangju is home to the country’s largest national AI data center in the public sector, as well as a concentration of universities, hospitals, and startup support facilities. In particular, Dong-gu District is leading a project to build a national AI data center for chronic disease genomic and clinical data, and is establishing a specialized AI healthcare ecosystem.
