“Blatant Undermining of Judicial Order Has Gone Too Far”
“Ultimately, They Just Want Guilty Verdicts, No Questions Asked”
Na Kyungwon, a member of the People Power Party, refuted National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee Chairwoman Choo Mi-ae's demand for her resignation, which was based on the accusation that she was protecting insurrectionists by delaying trials, saying, "This is nothing short of a declaration of war against the judiciary."
Na Kyungwon, who has been nominated as the opposition secretary for the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, stated on her social networking service (SNS) on the 15th, "Chairwoman Choo Mi-ae's comment that Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae is secretly protecting insurrectionists by delaying trials and should step down first is an unprecedented abuse of authority in our constitutional history," adding, "Is this something the chairwoman of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee should be saying?"
She continued, "Following Jeong Cheongrae's arrogant and reckless remarks, and Lee Jaemyung's personal resentment regarding his election law trial, the blatant destruction of judicial order has gone too far. While they are misleading the public by talking about a dedicated insurrection trial panel, the essence is clear," adding, "This is the political world trying to control matters that the judiciary should judge independently. This is a clear violation of judicial independence. The Democratic Party previously called for excluding Supreme Court justices appointed by the Yoon Suk Yeol administration from participating in trials, and now they are even pressuring the Chief Justice to resign."
Na Kyungwon ultimately criticized, "Isn't this essentially a call to 'produce guilty verdicts'?" She further questioned, "Isn't it a form of dictatorial rule when both investigations and trials must conform to the political establishment's preferences? Are they demanding the Chief Justice's resignation over supposed trial delays simply because the insurrection-related trials may not proceed as they wish?" She went on, "If that's the case, what about President Lee Jaemyung, who has halted five of his own trials? Isn't the Democratic Party, in fact, abusing its political power to whitewash crimes committed by their allies?"
In conclusion, she said, "The Democratic Party's stance is 'innocent if you're with us, guilty if you're not.' Why don't they just create a law that allows them to appoint all judges, Supreme Court justices, and Constitutional Court justices themselves? Or even a law that lets the Democratic Party conduct investigations and trials directly?" She continued, "Isn't this already happening? With a majority in the Assembly, the Democratic Party is acting like an occupying force, and now, after the executive branch, they are seeking to replace the head of the judiciary as well. This is the arrogance of the Democratic Party and a destruction of the constitutional order of the separation of powers. We must strip away the Democratic Party's false claims of popular sovereignty and clearly show what the true will of the people of the Republic of Korea is."
