Gangwon Targets New Travel Demand
with Pet-Friendly Accommodation Campaign
Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and the Gangwon Tourism Organization announced that, starting from September 15, they will launch the Gangwon Pet-Friendly Accommodation Campaign in collaboration with the pet lifestyle platform (web and mobile application). This initiative is a strategic program designed to position Gangwon as a leading pet-friendly tourist destination in response to the rapidly growing demand for pet-accompanied travel.
According to the Korea Tourism Organization's "2024 Pet-Accompanied Travel Status and Awareness Survey," 87% of pet-accompanied trips are conducted as individual free travel, and 79.5% of accommodations are booked individually through online platforms. Notably, Gangwon ranks second nationwide, with 64.6% of pet-friendly accommodation trips taking place in the province, highlighting its strong appeal among travelers with pets.
Amid this trend of individual and family-oriented tourism, Gangwon is gaining attention as the most sought-after destination for pet owners, thanks to its natural and leisure resources. The province and the tourism organization plan to enhance travel accessibility for pet-accompanied tourists and stimulate the local economy by expanding overnight stays and related spending through this campaign.
The Pet-Friendly Accommodation Campaign will run from September 15 until the budget is exhausted, with coupons valid until midnight on the day of issuance. Actual stays can be booked from September 16 to November 16, and unused coupons can be reissued the following day. The campaign is especially designed to attract more pet-accompanied tourists to Gangwon during the peak travel season in October, which includes the Chuseok holiday. However, depending on the budget situation, the event may end early or the schedule may be adjusted.
Coupons can only be used at pet-friendly accommodations within Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and cannot be combined with other discounts. Participation is available on a first-come, first-served basis every day from 10 a.m. through the pet lifestyle platform (web and mobile application).
Through this campaign, pet owners will find it easier to experience Gangwon, and the focus on overnight stays is expected to boost the local economy by encouraging spending on dining and activities. Furthermore, Gangwon is expected to establish itself as a leading destination for pet-friendly tourism as a result of this initiative.
Choi Sunghyun, CEO of the Gangwon Tourism Organization, stated, "This accommodation campaign is a meaningful project that actively welcomes new segments of tourism demand and drives local economic revitalization," adding, "We will continue our efforts to ensure Gangwon becomes the center of pet-friendly tourism."
