Applications Accepted Until September 22
Gangnam-gu in Seoul (Mayor Cho Sungmyung) will operate a "Pet Dog Care Shelter" ahead of the Chuseok holiday to ease the burden of pet care for residents. Applications will be accepted from September 15 to 22, and selected dogs can use the free care service for up to five days between October 2 and 12.
Currently, Gangnam-gu has approximately 40,000 registered companion animals, the highest among Seoul’s districts. With a large population of pet owners, many households face difficulties caring for their pets during holidays due to visits to their hometowns, business trips, or travel. In response, the district plans to collaborate with professional care providers, subsidize the cost of entrusting dogs to these services, alleviate the burden on residents, and promote a responsible pet culture.
The support is available for 100 registered pet dogs that are at least five months old and weigh 10 kilograms or less, with up to two dogs per household eligible. Applications can be submitted via a QR code on the Gangnam-gu Office website, and the selected recipients will be announced on September 26 after a review process.
The selection criteria are as follows: first priority is given to households that have adopted abandoned dogs; second priority to vulnerable groups (basic livelihood security recipients, lower-income families, and single-parent families) and people with disabilities; and third priority to general residents. Care services will be provided by four specialized companies: Docking About (Gaepo-dong), Meong Together Seolleung Branch (Yeoksam-dong), Banryeomunhwa (Nonhyeon-dong), and Joongang Animal Medical Center (Samseong-dong).
Cho Sungmyung, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, "As companion animals have become important family members in daily life, we will do our utmost to create an environment where residents can feel secure and be together with their pets," adding, "We will continue to build a warm city in Gangnam where people and animals can harmoniously coexist."
