Jangseong County in Jeollanam-do announced on September 12 that it will conduct a mass vaccination campaign for foot-and-mouth disease prevention targeting local cattle and goat farms in the second half of the year.
The vaccination campaign, which will run until September 28, targets 17,190 cattle (from 489 farms) and 3,066 goats (from 92 farms) that are over 8 weeks old.
Foot-and-mouth disease is a notifiable animal disease classified as Type 1, affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, pigs, and goats. Infected animals develop blisters on their lips, tongue, gums, nose, and between their toes. The disease is highly contagious, and young animals can die as a result of infection.
To prevent foot-and-mouth disease, vaccination must be administered according to the prescribed protocol: the first dose at two months of age, a second dose four weeks later, and subsequent doses every 4 to 6 months to maintain immunity.
Starting this year, the county has been systematically preventing outbreaks by conducting mass vaccinations in March and September and additional vaccinations in June and December. Notably, Jangseong County is the only region in Jeollanam-do to provide vaccination support through public veterinarians for large-scale farms raising more than 100 cattle or 300 goats. This initiative has been well received, as it reduces the burden on farmers and helps protect livestock.
Kim Hanjong, the county governor, urged, "We ask for your active cooperation in the second half of the year to achieve zero damage from foot-and-mouth disease through vaccination."
