Central 119 Rescue Headquarters Provides Large-Caliber Gun Firing System to Gangneung

Support with Large-Caliber Gun Firing System
Expected to Secure Over 10,000 Tons of Raw Water Per Day

As Gangneung City in Gangwon Province is making every effort to secure raw water amid the worst drought crisis, on September 12, the Central 119 Rescue Headquarters provided support with a large-caliber gun firing system, which is expected to enable the transfer of more than 10,000 tons of raw water per day to the Hongje Water Purification Plant.

The large-caliber gun firing system is a specialized firefighting device designed to respond to large-scale disasters such as major oil tank fires that are difficult to control with standard firefighting equipment. This system can discharge an enormous volume of water equivalent to what 26 regular fire pump trucks can spray simultaneously.

After conducting an on-site inspection with the National Fire Agency on September 6, Gangneung City carried out channel clearing and pipeline construction along the Namdaecheon Stream day and night from September 7 until midnight on September 12 in preparation for water flow. Following the water flow at 11:40 p.m. on September 11, water intake began at the intake well of the Hongje 3 Water Purification Plant from midnight on September 12.

With this equipment support, the temporary intake station in front of Guksayeoseonghwangsa in Hongje-dong, Gangneung City, can transfer 10,000 tons of raw water per day to the Hongje Water Purification Plant, located 1.2 kilometers away. In addition, with the expected supply of water from the Doam Dam water conduit after September 20, it is anticipated that a further 10,000 tons of raw water per day will be secured, bringing the total to more than 20,000 tons per day.

Kim Hongkyu, Mayor of Gangneung, stated, "I would like to express my deep gratitude to the Central 119 Rescue Headquarters for their equipment support during Gangneung's drought crisis. We will mobilize all administrative resources and overcome this drought crisis together as one."
