On September 12, the Daegu Metropolitan Council convened a special session to review the "Ordinance Repeal Bill on the Park Chunghee Presidential Memorial Project." Out of the total 33 council members, 32 opposed the repeal of the ordinance, while one member expressed support for its abolition.
During the plenary session that day, Assemblywoman Heo Siyoung of the People Power Party spoke against the repeal, while Assemblywoman Yuk Jeongmi of the Democratic Party voiced support for it.
In December last year, the unveiling ceremony of the Park Chung-hee statue was held at Dongdaegu Station Plaza.
A representative of the Daegu Metropolitan Council stated, "All 32 People Power Party members opposed the repeal, and it is presumed that the one Democratic Party member supported it. Although there were expectations of dissenting votes within the People Power Party, those predictions did not materialize."
The Planning and Administration Committee of the Daegu Metropolitan Council previously held a review on September 8 regarding the ordinance's repeal. After a vote among the six committee members, including the chairperson, the result was five against the repeal and one in favor, leading to the bill being forwarded to the plenary session.
In May of last year, under the tenure of former Mayor Hong Joonpyo, Daegu City enacted the "Park Chunghee Memorial Project Ordinance" to construct a statue of Park Chunghee at Dongdaegu Station. In December of that year, the statue was erected at Dongdaegu Station Plaza. In response, civic groups collected signatures from approximately 14,000 Daegu citizens and submitted a petition to abolish the Park Chunghee Memorial Project Ordinance.
