A Singular Path for 40 Years: Traces of Contemplation Engraved on Roof Tiles and Hanji
"Bringing Practicality to Seal Engraving"...On View Until the 21st
The solo exhibition "Heart Engraved on the Roof Tiles: Inscribing Nature and Time" by artist Kim Chungyeol Sobong will welcome visitors at the Mogin Art Museum in Suncheon from September 12 to September 21. This exhibition is highly anticipated as an opportunity to fully experience the unique artistic world of an artist who has devoted nearly 40 years solely to the path of art.
Kim Chungyeol has pioneered a distinctive creative method by combining seal engraving and calligraphy on traditional Korean materials such as roof tiles and hanji paper, seeking to reinterpret traditional art in a contemporary context. His works go beyond mere visual beauty, striving to break down the boundaries between everyday life and art while conveying a modern aesthetic. The artist emphasizes, "I have always engraved letters between seclusion and wandering," highlighting that the creative process itself is an act of self-reflection and a meditative pursuit to capture the principles of nature.
Having begun his journey in calligraphy in 1985, Kim has expanded his artistic horizons by working in both seal engraving and calligraphy since the 1990s. His artistic prowess is evidenced by his numerous awards in prestigious competitions such as the Korea Calligraphy Exhibition and the Korea Art Exhibition. He has also continuously broadened his creative world and engaged with the public through numerous group and invitational exhibitions nationwide. Now based in Suncheon, he remains actively engaged in expanding the scope of his creations, exploring both the practical and artistic values of seal engraving.
In particular, Kim's works are praised for capturing traces of profound contemplation formed at the intersection of humanity, nature, and time. Each character he engraves on roof tiles and hanji paper is seen as the result of years of discipline and meditation. His art, which delivers a weighty message to today's viewers through traditional materials and practices, prompts those living in the modern era to rediscover forgotten values and the resonance of life.
An official from the Mogin Art Museum stated, "This exhibition will be a meaningful opportunity to shed light on both the practicality and artistic aesthetics of seal engraving," adding, "We hope that many people will find deep comfort and inspiration from art in their lives through the works of Kim Chungyeol."
