Jeongeup City to Inspect Seafood 'Origin Labeling' from September 17 to 19

Jeongeup City in North Jeolla Province will conduct a special inspection of seafood origin labeling at 30 locations, including traditional markets, medium and large supermarkets, and restaurants, over three days from September 17 to 19.

According to the city on September 12, this inspection has been organized ahead of the Chuseok holiday to ensure that citizens can purchase seafood with confidence. The city plans to focus on seafood items commonly used for ancestral rites and gifts, such as croaker, pollock, squid, and dried yellow corvina, as well as items with a high rate of origin labeling violations, including red sea bream and octopus.

The inspection will cover whether the origin is falsely labeled or not labeled at all, labeling methods that could cause consumer confusion, and whether receipts and transaction records indicating the origin are kept on site.

Minor violations detected on site will be immediately corrected, while serious violations will be subject to administrative actions such as prosecution or fines in accordance with relevant laws.

In particular, falsely labeling the origin may result in up to seven years in prison or a fine of up to 100 million won under the Act on Labeling of Origin of Agricultural and Fishery Products. Failure to label the origin may result in a fine of up to 10 million won.

The city will distribute guidance notices on origin labeling in areas vulnerable to violations, such as traditional markets, and will also conduct promotional activities to raise awareness and encourage compliance with the labeling system.

A city official stated, "We will conduct thorough inspections to ensure that citizens and visitors returning home for Chuseok can safely enjoy seafood they can trust," adding, "We aim to establish a transparent distribution system that protects both consumers and honest producers."
