Choi Byungso, an artist well known for his "Newspaper Erasure" series in which he repeatedly drew lines on newspaper, passed away on September 11. He was 82 years old.
Choi graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Chung-Ang University’s College of Arts and the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Keimyung University. He was a central figure in the Daegu contemporary art movement in the late 1970s. He is recognized for leaving a significant mark on the history of contemporary Korean art through his experimental approach and unique visual language.
His signature work, the "Newspaper Erasure" series, established his own artistic language by repeatedly drawing lines with ballpoint pens and pencils on newspaper.
He also created installation works that resembled white monochrome paintings by arranging more than 8,000 white metal hangers from dry cleaners on the floor, forming a piece measuring 7 meters high and 4 meters wide.
During his lifetime, Choi held numerous solo and group exhibitions at major museums and galleries both in Korea and abroad, including the Mus?e d'Art Moderne de Saint-?tienne in France and Daegu Art Museum.
The memorial altar has been set up in Room 301 of the funeral hall at Yeungnam University Medical Center in Daegu. He is survived by his wife Ryu Hyangha, children Choi Jian, Choi Yoonjung, and Choi Wonsuk, son-in-law Kim Sungkeun, and daughter-in-law Kang Miae. The funeral will be held at 9:30 a.m. on September 13.
