AI Is No Longer a Choice, but a Core Asset for Future Competitiveness
Government-Linked 'AI for Energy, Energy for AI'
Korea National Oil Corporation (President Kim Dongseob) announced on September 10 that it has launched the "AI Digital Innovation Division." The establishment of this new division is a proactive measure to support the government's goal of becoming one of the top three AI powerhouse nations and achieving a hyper-innovative economy through a national AI transformation. It also aims to lead innovation across South Korea's oil and energy industries.
The corporation has set a vision to become a "smart energy company that creates new value based on AI and data," going beyond simply adopting AI technologies. To achieve this, it will strategically focus on establishing AI governance, building an efficient AI operational foundation, and driving innovation and performance in work processes based on AI. These efforts will be concentrated on strengthening safety, administration, and sustainability, which are directly connected to the daily lives of citizens.
The corporation's key areas of AI application include: improving administrative efficiency through the use of AI agents; automating facilities by implementing physical AI such as robots, drones, and CCTV; and conducting specialized analysis (Deep Research) in core business areas such as oil exploration and production, storage maintenance, and safety management. The company plans to apply AI to work processes where innovative outcomes can be achieved and will continue to identify and develop successful cases.
In the oil exploration sector, where AI utilization capabilities lag behind, the corporation intends to rapidly enhance its capabilities by collaborating with leading global companies. It also plans to foster an AI collaboration ecosystem specializing in energy and safety with companies in the Ulsan region.
President Kim Dongseob emphasized, "AI is no longer a technology of the future but a reality, and it is now a key tool for transforming operational methods across all industries. Through AI and digital transformation, we will support the government's vision for a hyper-innovative economy and grow together with the public as a smart energy public enterprise."
