A new bridge is expected to be built in Sejong City, connecting the National Assembly Sejong Building and the residential area on the southern side of the Geumgang River.
The Administrative City Construction Agency (hereafter referred to as the Agency) announced on the 11th its plan to construct the eighth Geumgang Crossing Bridge. Currently, the planned site for the National Assembly Sejong Building and the southern side of the Geumgang River are connected by the four-lane Haetmuri Bridge. However, as the city has grown, congestion during commuting hours has worsened, and with the opening of the National Assembly Sejong Building in the future, traffic volume is expected to increase by up to two times. As a result, the need for an additional bridge has been consistently raised.
The Agency confirmed the necessity for a new bridge through a preliminary feasibility study conducted last year for additional Geumgang Crossing Bridges. It comprehensively evaluated the dispersal effect on Haetmuri Bridge, connectivity with the existing road network, and the safety of school routes, and selected the optimal location for the new bridge.
The new bridge will connect Sumogwon-ro on the north side of the Geumgang River and Gukchaek Research Institute 2-ro on the south side. It will have a total length of 713 meters and four lanes in both directions. To ensure smooth traffic flow, Gukchaek Research Institute 2-ro, which connects to the new bridge, will be expanded from two lanes to four lanes, and nearby intersections will also be improved.
The Agency expects that, with the opening of the new bridge and the concurrent operation of both Haetmuri Bridge and the new bridge, traffic in the vicinity of the National Assembly Sejong Building will be dispersed, congestion during commuting hours will be alleviated, and the overall level of transportation service in the Administrative City will be significantly improved.
In particular, the new bridge will be designed not only for functionality but also to enhance the cityscape, aiming to become a prestigious landmark symbolizing the status of Sejong as the administrative capital. The design will ensure harmony with existing distinctive bridges such as Handuri Bridge and Ieung Bridge, with the goal of developing it as a new urban tourism resource.
Furthermore, to proactively respond to increasing traffic demand, the Agency will accelerate the construction of the new bridge. This year, it plans to complete community briefings, environmental impact assessments, and traffic impact assessments, incorporate the construction plan in the first half of next year, and complete construction by 2032.
Kang Juyeop, head of the Agency, stated, "Expanding transportation infrastructure is essential to support the completion of Sejong as the administrative capital, and the new Geumgang Bridge will be an important starting point for this." He added, "We will complete it as a prestigious landmark bridge befitting the status of the future administrative capital."
