SK Hynix Begins Supplying World's First High-Performance Mobile NAND Solution

World's First Mass Production of High-Performance NAND Solution
App Launch Time Reduced by 45% Compared to Conventional UFS
Optimized for On-Device AI and Data Processing

SK Hynix will supply its mobile NAND solution product, "Zoned Universal Flash Storage (Zoned UFS) 4.1," to its clients. It is reported that this product will be installed in Google's latest artificial intelligence (AI) smartphone.

On September 11, SK Hynix announced that it has started supplying ZUFS 4.1, the world's first mass-produced product of its kind, to customers. ZUFS is a product that applies zoned storage technology-which stores data in different zones according to its purpose and characteristics-to UFS, a high-speed flash memory storage device. SK Hynix developed this product by significantly improving data transfer speed and power efficiency through close collaboration with clients, and successfully completed the certification process in June of this year. Mass production began in earnest in July, and supply has now commenced.

An SK Hynix representative stated, "As this product is being installed in the latest smartphones of global clients, we are able to demonstrate the excellence of our technology in the global market once again," adding, "We will support powerful on-device AI capabilities in smartphones, offering users an innovative experience."

When this product is installed in smartphones, it improves the operating system (OS) speed and enhances data management efficiency. During long-term use, the decline in read performance is alleviated by more than four times, reducing app launch times by 45% compared to conventional UFS. In terms of data storage method, while UFS overwrites new data on top of existing data, this product is designed to record data sequentially, shortening AI app execution time by 47%.

Error handling capabilities have also been significantly strengthened compared to version 4.0, which was developed in May last year. It detects errors more precisely and clearly communicates necessary actions to the central control unit. This is expected to greatly enhance system reliability and recovery capabilities. SK Hynix explained that, given these performance characteristics, the new product is considered an optimized solution for today’s mobile environment, where on-device AI and large-scale data processing are essential.

Kim Joosun, President of AI Infrastructure and Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) at SK Hynix, said, "ZUFS 4.1, which we have successfully begun supplying, is the first case of development and mass production through collaboration to optimize the Android operating system and storage devices, and its scope of application will continue to expand." He added, "We will continue to supply the NAND solutions our customers require in a timely manner, while further strengthening global partnerships to build differentiated competitiveness in the AI memory sector."
